Dad Bods and Beards

It is surprising how fast something becomes a trend. More surprising is how it is tied together with other trends. Almost like creating a total package. The Women of America are going crazy over it. It is not being covered from head to toe in tattoos, and it is not even the ripples of a muscular man. In fact, it is quite the opposite, it is known as the “Dad Bod”. However, what is it exactly, why is it more appealing than other more aesthetic body types, and why should you be coveting one?

What is a “Dad Bod”

So, what is a “Dad Bod”, exactly? The “Dad Bod”, by definition, is a guy who is not incredibly chiseled, but at the same time, is not unhealthy. He's not overweight. Maybe, he was an athlete in High School, then went to College and put a little bit of squish over his muscles. By all rights, he is fit, and would be best personified as being solid.

"The “Dad Bod”, by definition, is a guy who is not incredibly chiseled, but at the same time, is not unhealthy."

Interestingly, the term “dad bod” has actually been around for a while — Urban Dictionary's definition of it dates back to October of 2009.

It is an image that many men these days can relate to. See, the common understanding is that when you settle down (get married), you begin to let things slide. Maybe, it is because you no longer have time for things you once used to do, like spending time with Frat-mates. More accurately, time that you used to spend on yourself is more properly aligned with your significant other. Additionally, as life events begin to unfold in this relationship, some things start to take higher priority. For example, new child comes into the picture, now playing sports with friends and hitting the gym are replaced with four-hour feedings and spending a couple extra minutes in bed to catch up on sleep you missed.

You have in fact become domesticated. And Women love it.

Why is a “Dad Bod” More Appealing?

Dad Bods Beards and Women

Women seeking to settle down with a man might be more inclined to seek someone who may appear to have more time for them. I wrote an article a while back entitled “Her Bearded Desire – Are Men with Beards More Desirable to the opposite sex?” where I described how women find men with beards more attractive if they are looking to settle down. The “Dad Bod” is no exception. A woman’s attraction to her counterpart is a direct reflection of her expectations on that person.

Now that you a better understanding of what a “Dad Bod” is, lets tie that into beards. It is in fact a comfortable choice. Now do not think that if a woman seeks to settle down with you because you seem comfortable it is because she is settling. In fact she is doing quite the opposite. She, has analyzed her choices and chosen the most likely candidate to give her what she seeks; Commitment.

A Beard signals to the opposite sex that he is patient, calculated, defined, and composed. A “Dad Bod” shows he is comfortable and less likely to run off. In my opinion, if you think about it, it is pretty smart. They are seeking security and commitment. Girls like to picture their future selves with the man they are with early on. At this point, you are making it easy to imagine.

Women who have dated muscular guys or skinny guys will tell you that he was to bony or hard. They want something to nestle into. To seek comfort, and protection from the world. With the added aesthetics of a beard he seems scary to the outside world, yet gentle to her.

Accept the “Dad Bod”

Whether you accept it or not, this is the path of most men, when they settle down. It is not a bad thing. Your priorities have changed, or you have embraced that you will never be a champion Muscle Builder. Either way, you have decided that the “Dad Bod” is nothing to be ashamed of. Let’s face it, if you are a little soft in the middle, your girl will feel less intimidated standing next to you. See, every day, women worry about what men may think of them. Additionally, they think about what the girl next to her is judging her. As such, you by her side with the little belly you are sporting, seems compatible.
