STUDIES SUGGEST THEY KNOW WHY WE CHOOSE TO GROW A BEARD

Throughout your beard growing journey you'll often meet the occasional person, be it a friend, work colleague or a complete stranger that will simply ask you 'Why?' By this we assume they are referring to the beard, and are asking why we choose to grow one. I usually fire back some smart ass response in reference to the individual's hair or something of a similar value which usually stops them dead in their tracks. They're numerous reasons as to why we choose to grow out our beards, yet every now and then the media like to label us a 'fad' or a 'trend'. I've voiced my displeasure about such titles before in previous blog posts. Well, it seems that the ''experts'' have been hard at it again with even more surveys and studies that have taken place in regards to our facial forests. This time they think they have finally cracked the reason as to why us blokes grow our beards...

According to recent research it appears that men as a species have evolved as well as our beard game and we grow out our facial fuzz to appear more stronger and dominant in comparison to our clean shaven counterparts. ''But why?'' I hear you all gasp. Apparently we do this in order to appear more attractive to the opposite sex, or same sex depending on your sexual orientation. Almost like an animal instinct we grow a beard to catch and hopefully keep our possible mates attention and although not every woman may appreciate a well groomed beard they're more likely to pick us out from the crowd and often we remain much more memorable as well.

A more recent study conducted by Northumbria University revealed that a beard can boost a man's standing against other men when competing for a mate. Tamsin Saxton, of Northumbria University, went on to say - “To reproduce it is often not enough to simply be attractive. You also have to compete with the same sex for mating opportunities. The funny, shy guy at the back of the bar isn’t going to stand a chance when competing with his bolshier brothers otherwise.''

So there you have it! All this time we've been growing out our beards for what we thought was ourselves when in fact all we're really doing is constantly trying to impress any possible sexual partner we may encounter along the way in our life. I call BS on the most part of such ''studies.'' Why can't a man grow as big of a beard as he so pleases without being ''studied'' by some so called professional to unroute the reasons as to why he is doing so? Being a married guy with three wonderful children myself I can confirm I didn't begin my beard journey for nobody else other than myself. Yeah, the wife digs the beard and and my daughters often like to groom away at it with pink ribbons and bobbles, so it does have its plus points too. But they are just added bonuses.

What do you guys think about these recent studies? What were the reasons behind your choices for growing out your beard? As always let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

And until next time, Beard on Brothers, Beard on...
